Do Re Mi

We were given free tickets to Do Re Mi for review purposes, Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.
Me - Do Re Mi was a good show. It was about Hubie Cram. He wanted to sell jukeboxes. He started to promote a singer whose name was Tilda Mullins. Some of the show was confusing to me although, I liked it anyway. I liked the music but I don't remember any of the songs except Make Someone Happy. I really like that song. I also liked a song called What's New at the Zoo. In the show, it was sung by Tilda Mullins. I liked it because I liked animals and I liked that it was about the zoo. Over all, it was a good show. I like going to shows at Musicals Tonight. I like that their shows only run for a short amount of time so they can put on a lot of different shows. If we see one, we only have to wait a little bit before they have another one we can see.*

*The above post is by Aurella.

Mom - Here are ten reasons to see a show at Musicals Tonight

1) For the opportunity to see shows that you've never seen before.

2) For the opportunity to see shows that haven't been seen on stage in a long time.

3) For the opportunity to see shows that might not have done as well as they could have when they originally ran.

4) Because where else can you see a musical in New York for $25.00

5) For the opportunity to see talented young performers because you never now who is going to be the next big star and you will be able to say you saw them when.

6) For the opportunity to see seasoned performers that you might not have seen before or you haven't seen in a long time.

7) To hear great songs that you've never heard before or that you haven't heard in a long time.

8) To find out where some of the great songs came from.

9) Because it's in a convenient location not too far from Port Authority Bus terminal in case you are only coming to town to see a show and go.

10)  To see producer, Mel Miller's cute dogs who make an appearance before every show.

And that's our view. Tune in tomorrow for Funtivity Friday.

Where-To-Wednesday - She Loves Me and Do Re Mi and Do Re Mi

We were given free tickets to She Loves Me for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: She Loves Me

Where: Studio 54
             254 W. 54th St.
             New York, New York

When: Now through June 12, 2016

Who: Recommended for ages 13 and above
Mom's view: She Loves Me is a gentle little musical. There is no huge chorus. There are no over the top production numbers. It is just a quiet little romance. However, this quiet little romance packs a powerful punch with its talented cast led by Laura Benanti, best known for TV shows like Supergirl and Nashville as well as The Sound of Music Live, and Zachary Levi, best known for the TV show, Chuck.  The songs are sweet although not necessarily especially memorable. The story is tender and romantic. The plot revolves around a pair of co-workers who hate each other but don't realize they are actually each other's secret romantic pen pals. Although, this is a story that has been done many times before, that doesn't take away from the enjoyment of this version. In fact, although the most well-known version is probably the 1998 movie You've Got Mail, She Loves Me actually predates that one as it was originally presented in 1963. Both She Loves Me and You've Got Mail were actually based on a play by Miklos Laszlo called Parfumerie. There were also several other earlier movie versions of the story. Although, the show is recommended for ages 13 and up, there is nothing really objectionable about the story except plot points involving a character having an affair with another character who is married (nothing is shown, however, it is only talked about) and the sound of a gunshot and the implication that a character is going to commit suicide (although this turns out not to be the case). However, these references would probably go over the head of some younger viewers except that they would, of course, hear the noise of the gunshot. I  would not recommend the show for very young children anyway as it would probably bore them. Tweens and teens who love romance and especially those that love old musicals would probably enjoy it. We were given free tickets to Do Re Mi for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: Do Re Mi

Where: The Lion Theatre
             410 W. 42nd St.
             New York, NY

When: Now through April 3, 2016

Who: Recommended for ages 13 and above.
Mom's view: Do Re Mi is an old musical that ran for about a year in 1960. The plot is slight and most likely the only reason the show ran as long as it did was because of the presence of its two stars Phil Silvers and Nancy Walker. The show does have some nice songs, however, including the classic Make Someone Happy. Musicals Tonight's version of the show currently running at The Lion Theatre is lively and energetic.  The cast is led by Patrick John Moran  as Hubie and Laura Daniel as Kay who wisely choose to put their own spin on the roles instead of attempting to be a carbon copy of the original stars. Their versions of the characters gives them a softer sweeter edge which enhances the romantic aspect of the story. The secondary story of the love at first sight romance of singer Tilda Mullen and John Henry Wheeler is even more romantic.  Beth DeMichele as Tilda has a pretty voice and brings a sweet wide-eyed innocence to her role and Tyler Milliron does an admirable job with a role that doesn't seem to be as fully developed as some of the other roles in the show. The show is definitely worth seeing for the sake of nostalgia. As always, we applaud any effort to give people the opportunity to see old long gone musicals presented on the stage once more. There is nothing in the show that is particularly objectionable for children except for some fighting although I am sure most children have seen much worse in any PG movie as there isn't even any bloodshed in this show. However, I don't think kids would have much interest in the story except for tweens and teens who love romance. For more information go to http://www.musicalstonight.org/. Tips for Tuesday - Books: Perfect Chemistry and The Best of Enemies

This post may contain affiliate links. If you click on a link and make a purchase, we may be compensated.
Me - Today I am recommending Perfect Chemistry by Simone Elkeles, It is one of my favorite books. It is so romantic. It is one of the most romantic books I ever read. It is about Alex and Brittany, a couple from opposite sides of town. At first, they hate each other. Then, they fall in love and are determined to be together despite all obstacles. Even though it sounds like a cliche, it is a very unique take on this type of story. It is a really sweet story that you won't be able to put down.
Mom - Today I am recommending  The Best of Enemies by Jen Lancaster.  Sarabeth Chandler has two best friends, Jacqueline Jordan and Kitty Carricoe. The only problem is Jacqueline and Kitty can't stand each other. When Sarabeth's husband dies in a mysterious plane crash, Jacqueline and Kitty are forced to put aside their differences and join forces to get to the bottom of the mystery for their best friend's sake. This book was a  very entertaining read. The story was interesting and moved along quickly. The characters especially Jacqueline and Kitty were very well drawn.  It was easy to put yourself in each of their shoes and feel sympathy for both. The ending was a shocker, but very satisifying. I would highly recommend this great book.

And that's our view. Tune in tomorrow for Where-To-Go Wednesday.

Monthly Mash-up March, 2016 - Me: Dreams and Mom: Home Videos

Me  - My topic for this month is dreams. I had a dream that my family was backstage at the Broadway show School of Rock. We were talking to the people in the show. They all seemed nice and fun to be around except for one. I don't remember who it was but there was one person who was really mean. In the dream, I had decided that I wanted to learn how to play the bass guitar and then try-out for School of Rock. After that, fabulous things kept happening to me. That dream has inspired me to actually learn how to play the bass guitar and try-out for School of Rock. I am so glad I had that dream, and I really hope that I can actually get in to School of Rock.*

*The above post is by younger sister, Aurella.

Mom - My topic for this month is home videos. I am not talking about the old fashioned kind of home videos which families made for themselves and only shared among themselves. I am talking about the modern kind of videos which people share with the world on YouTube in the hopes that they'll go viral. First of all, the fact that they are even called viral tells you that there is something wrong with this whole culture of oversharing. I don't understand these viral videos. I mean I get that if you are at your kids recital or soccer game or something like that you would be taking a video because you would want to preserve that event for prosterity. However, if you are taking videos while you just happen to be riding along in the car or when you are reprimanding your child for stealing a donut or something like that there can be no other reason than that you are just hoping that your child while do or say something cute enough to go viral on YouTube. If so, that is just sad. It is sad for the kids because either they are going to have a lifetime of embarassing videos of themselves out there for all the world to see or they are going to think that their entire lives are something to be out there to share with the world. It is sad for the parents because wouldn't you rather be spending good quality time interacting with your kids in a real way instead of viewing them from behind a video camera? After all, kids are only young for a little while and that time period goes by in the blink of an eye.

And that's our view. What's on your mind? Tune in tomorrow for Tips for Tuesday.

Museum of the City of New York and Mister G Concert

We were given free tickets  to the Museum of the City of New York for review purposes. Any and al opinions expressed here are our own based on our experience.

Me - I had fun at the Museum of the City of New York. They had  an awesome doll house there. It was like a doll mansion. I wish I had a doll house like that. There were a lot of painted pictures of historical people like Alexander Hamilton and George Washington and many others too. We had fun looking at the pictures and making up stories for people we didn't know. It was also fun guessing if they were who we thought they were. Then, we looked at the names to see if we were right. They had a room with lots of jewelry. There was also a gold platter there too. They had a dress that was actually worn by Barbra Streisand in a movie. It was so cool! There was a whole exhibit on the New York City Marathon. I don't think I could ever run in a marathon because it is so long.  We saw a camera that was actually seen on the show Mysteries at the Museum. They had a lot of pictures that were taken with the camera in the museum. Jacob Riis took the pictures of poor people to show how bad their living conditions were. I had a good time at the Museum of the City of New York.

We were given free tickets to the Mister G concert for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own based on our experience.
\Me - The Mister G concert was great for little kids. They were dancing and singing and having a good time. At one point, they even got to run in place. He had  a lot of songs that were fun for little kids. One was about chocolate. One was about bugs. One was about all these things that if they happened you would run. One was counting and animals in Spanish. My sister and I are really too old for Mister G, but I had a good time at the concert. I liked the concert because the School of Rock kids played a few songs with Mister G. The School of Rock kids are great! They are amazing! They are extremely talented. They sang a song with Mister G about Pizza for Breakfast. They sang a few more songs too, but I don't remember what they were called. It was a lot of fun and little kids would love it. It made me really want to see School of Rock.
And that's Aurella's view. Funtivity Friday will be closed this week. Tune in Sunday for this week's scoop.

Where-To-Go-Wednesday - Museum of the City of New York and Mister G Concert

We were given free tickets to the Museum of the City of New York for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.
What: The Museum of the City of New York

Where: 1220 Fifth Ave.
             (at 103 St.)
             New York, NY

Who: 6 and up

Mom's view: If you watch, Mysteries at the Museum on the Travel Channel, you are probably familiar with the Museum of the City of New York as many episodes of the show discuss artifacts that can be found here. The Museum displays exhibits related to the past, present and future of New York City.  On-going exhibits include Gilded New York a display of objects related to elite culture of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Objects on display here include jewelry, clothing and portraits. Another on-going exhibit is Activist New York with displays on everything from the fight for women's right to vote and the fight to form unions to present day struggles including the fight for gay rights and the fight to save the environment.  This exhibit contains many pictures posters and other artifacts. Exhibits on display for a limited time only include an exhibit on Yiddish theater which includes costumes and posters among other things. Even if you are not familiar with Yiddish theater, you may be familiar with some of the shows and events represented in this collection since it includes such things as one of Barbra Streisand's Funny Girl costumes and a poster from the movie The Jazz Singer staring Al Jolson.  This exhibit will be running through July 31, 2016. Another current exhibit Picturing Prestige: New York is  a gallery of portraits of well to do New Yorkers from 1700 to 1860. The portaits  include those of well-known historical figures, such as, Alexander Hamilton as well as others of people who may not be as well-known. This exhibit will be on display through October 11, 2016.

While merely walking through the museum and viewing the exhibits on display might not be very interesting to most young children, the museum does present many special programs for families and schools. These programs include an educational aspect as well as an interactive aspect. Upcoming programs includes ones where children learn about costumes in Yiddish Theater and then design one of their own, one where children learn about the flowers that bloom in the Central Park Conservancy Garden and then make a Spring mobile, and one where children get to explore books, learn about book binding, and make their own book to take home. All children's programs are geared to children ages 6-12. They are all free with admission to the Museum, and they all  include a snack. For more about children's programs offered by the museum go to http://www.mcny.org/calendar-and-events/family-programs for more about the museum in general go to http://www.mcny.org/.

We were given free tickets to a recent Mister G concert at Symphony Space in New York City for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own based on our experience.
What: Mister G Concert

When and Where: See below for tour schedule

Who: All ages
Our view: Mister G is a family friendly rocker who will especially appeal to children between the ages of 3 and 7. He sings songs about topics children love including animals, chocolate and bugs. He is a multicultural singer who sings songs which include both English and Spanish. He has, in fact, won a Latin Grammy for Best Children's Album. Mister G's concerts are fun interactive experiences for children. Children are encouraged not only to sing along but to get up and move as well. Mister G recently performed a concert at Symphony Space in New York City with special guests the kids rock band from the Broadway musical, School of Rock.  For a clip of the concert, go here. Once you've viewed it, you will be more familiar with Mister G and the School of Rock kids band, and  we are sure you will want to see and hear more of both. Total Vocal

What: Total Vocal: A Contemporary A Capella  Concert

Where: Carnegie Hall

When: March 20, 2016
Me - Total Vocal was really good. I liked the singing. They all had very nice voices. I liked the song Try, and I loved the song Love Shack. I wish that the groups that were in Pitch Slapped got to do more. They only got to sing background in two songs. I had hoped they were going to do more, and that is what I was most excited about before I went to the show. I thought it was strange that in the concert they sang  the Spiderman theme song. I thought it was amazing that they could even make the Spiderman song sound really beautiful and nice. I hated the movie Pitch Perfect 2, and I didn't really like the music in it. However, they sang a couple songs from that  in the concert and made them sound good too. It was cool to be in Carnegie Hall, and the sound was incredible. Even when people were clapping you could hear it really loud. Apparently, they did a show like this last year too, but I didn't  know about it so I didn't go until this year. It was both my mom and my first experience seeing an A Cappella Concert and first experience seeing a concert at Carnegie Hall. It was really good. If they have another show like this next year, I would definitely go again.*

*The above post is by younger sister, Aurella who starting this week will go from doing guest posts to becoming a more regular part of the blog.

Mom - I just love A Capella  music, but I never had a chance to attend an A Capella concert before. I am so glad I got to go to this one. It was a great!. The show was conducted arranged and directed by Deke Sharon familiar to audiences of the TV show Pitch Slapped where he lead the high school A Capella group Stay Tuned in the summer invitationals last year. He has also worked on the TV show, The Sing-Off as well as the movies, Pitch Perfect and Pitch Perfect 2. He is great, and he did a wonderful job with this show.  I really loved the song choices including songs from the TV shows The Sing-Off and Pitch Slapped as well as from the movie Pitch Perfect 2. I didn't actually like the songs in the movie Pitch Perfect 2 when I saw them in the movie probably because I didn't really like the movie, but even those songs sounded good here. Other songs included The Carpenters, Close to You; Coldplay's Fix You and a Beatles Medley among others.  The singing voices were all beautiful. However, like like my daughter I was disappointed that the groups from the TV show Pitch Slapped didn't get to do more. I hadn't heard of any of the other groups appearing in the show although they were all good. Actress, Chrissy Fit, who played the character Florence "Flo" Fuentes in the movie Pitch Perfect 2 also appeared in this concert. She sang Try. I didn't really like her character in the movie, but she sounded good here. I like her much better as herself than as her character in the movie.  The audience even got the opportunity to get in on the action by singing along to the song The Lion Sleeps Tonight at the very end of the concert. All in all, Total Vocal was totally fun and totally entertaining and I would totally go to another concert like this if I ever had the chance.

And that's our view. What is the most entertaining concert you've ever been to?

Tune in tomorrow for Tips for Tuesday.
