Chinese Lantern Festival

The Philadelphia Chinese Lantern Festival is a celebration of light and culture that features artisans from China creating magnificent steel-framed and silk-wrapped giant animals, springtime flowers and trees, and symbols of Chinese culture using traditional Chinese methods. For five weeks, Franklin Square will glow with 29 larger-than-life illuminated lantern displays of 1,500 individual sculptures with more than 15,000 LED lights in brilliant colors. The giant fan favorite Chinese Dragon (newly rebuilt), but all of the other displays will be new for the 2017 Festival. In addition to the gorgeous light installations, witness authentic cultural performances that are all new for 2017 such as acrobats and folk dancers. Taste Asian cuisine and American favorites, drink a toast at the Dragon Beer Garden, and shop for artists’ creations crafted on site. You will still be able to play Philly Mini Golf, ride the Parx Liberty Carousel, and enjoy Center City’s best play place as well. Proceeds that Historic Philadelphia receives from the Festival will go into the operation and management of Franklin Square and its many free events all year long.

The artistry that has propelled Battery Dance into international prominence and its passionate social activism will merge as the Company unveils four new works in its 41st Annual New York Season at Schimmel Center. With the presence of dancers from Iraq and Romania on stage and the joining of creative forces with an Armenian-Syrian visual artist and Syrian and Tunisian composers, the Company's collaborative spirit is boosted to an all-time high.
On Foot
Reflecting his company's engagement with refugees and youth in conflict zones over the past decade, Jonathan Hollander has assembled artistic forces that pair the Company's brilliant ensemble of dancers with Kevork Mourad and Kinan Azmeh, Syria-born visual artist and musician respectively; Tunisian composer Anouar Brahem; and Iraqi dancer Hussein Smko, first recipient of the Company's Adel Euro Campaign for Dancers Seeking Refuge. This powerful collaboration yields choreography, visual imagery and music that pulsates with the life-force of refugees who overcome staggering odds to reach safety and promise in new lands, while mourning lost family and community members, perished dreams and destroyed homelands. Guest artists Kevork Mourad will participate in the performances by making art that becomes an immersive and ever-changing environment for the piece. Lighting design by Barry Steele and costumes by Tyler Holland will further enrich the production.
Reconstruction
Following the pattern it established in 2011 with Autobiographica and continued in 2013 with Perceptual Motion, Battery Dance unleashes the choreographic talents of its dancers in the creation of a new ensemble work with segments spearheaded by each Company member. The group Matmos created an album sampled from reenactments of battles from The American Civil War and it is against this "musical" background that Company members express their responses to living in the current chaotic political environment. Each dancer has chosen a unique cut from the album and their movements are kinetic, athletic, fast-paced and visceral.
Double Knot
Channeling the talents of two young male dancers, Hussein Smko from Iraq and Razvan Stoian from Romania, Battery Dance's own Sean Scantlebury crafts a propulsive duet evoking imagery of wrestlers, gladiators, compatriots, competitors and brothers. Recently, Scantlebury was honored to be included in Dance.com's "15 Black Dancers Who Are Changing the World," second only to Misty Copeland.
Echoes of Erbil
Chants, gesture and movement combine in this evocative solo that references the land, traditions and culture of the Kurdish region of Iraq, created and performed by Hussein Smko, the first recipient of Battery Dance's Adel Euro Campaign for Dancers Seeking Refuge.

A one-act opera, Fireworks is a comedy and social commentary seen through the eyes of an intergalactic de Toqueville (IT) who travels to Earth to investigate why colored lights erupt every year at the same time and from the same place on a planet orbiting a star in the heavens. Landing, the alien encounters a host of quintessential American characters including a geeky high school boy, a rebellious teenage girl, an actor trying to make a name for himself, a harried single mother, and an immigrant park groundskeeper, all getting ready for a Fourth of July celebration. The Alien has explored zillions of galaxies, but she's never seen anything as brash, daring or infectious as this idea of democracy.

LABAlive THREE: OTHERS will showcase the final group of presenting fellows for this year, Elana Greenfield, Laura Beatrix Newmark, and Michael Leibenluft, followed by a teaching by Reuben Namdar, LABA Teacher and Sapir Award Winner. This night of new theatre will highlight the many ways that the theme OTHER resonates both personally and culturally.
Director Michael Leibenluft (Obie Award Winner), in association with Gung Ho Projects, will present Salesman之死, the story of Arthur Miller's journey to Beijing in 1983 to direct DEATH OF A SALESMAN. In this theatrical investigation between the two iterations of this play , conceived and directed by Michael Leibenluft with text by Jeremy Tiang, this work examines the question, what is this play in China?
The second of the three pieces, WRENCH by Elana Greenfield (Whiting Writers' Award in drama), is part IV of a six part play about two women living on ladders during a flood. As the familiar world fades an ancient story/landscape begins to emerge.
The final of the three pieces is Hannah and Her Sisters: 5 stories on m(OTHER)hood by Laura Beatrix Newmark which examines the production of the next generation and how it inherently brings with it tremendous feelings of "otherness." Featuring Jennifer Gilmore (author), Sara Ivry, Gabriella Spierer, Becky Skoff, and Laura Beatrix Newmark.

The LABA Fellowship seeks culture makers from multiple artistic disciplines that are passionate about new Jewish culture, text study, and the creation of new work.
