I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

Theater Thursday - Waitress, Pippin, and Ring Twice for Miranda

What: Waitress

Where: Brooks Atkinson Theatre
             256 W. 47th St.
             New York, NY

Who: Teens and Up
Me - Waitress was amazing! Everything about it is great. The story is interesting. The acting is awesome. Even though most of the cast has already changed from the original cast, it's still a great show. We saw it when Jesse Mueller still played the lead role of Jenna. However, she recently left the show. Sarah Barielle's, who wrote the songs, will soon be taking over temporarily. That should be interesting. One original cast member still in the show is Christopher Fitzgerald. He plays Ogie. There is this one number that he does called Never Ever Getting Rid of Me. It is the funniest number ever. It is hilarious! Over all, I love the songs. They are wonderful! I go around all the time singing them. It's practically all I ever want to listen to. I like all the songs, and I can't pick a favorite although there are some I like better than others. The show has a lot of funny parts. It is hilarious. They actually sell real pies at the theater. They are very small and cost a lot. However, they smell and taste delicious. The whole theater smells like apple pie. There is actually an oven in the lobby where they bake a pie, but they don't sell that one. They sell ones that are ready made. I love all the interesting pies that the character of Jenna makes up in the show. You can actually get a recipe book of those pies, but I don't know if they sell it at the theater or not. It is the best show ever, and I would really highly recommend you go see it!

We were given free tickets to Pippin for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.
What: Pippin

Where: State Theatre, New Jersey
             15 Livingston Ave.
             New Brunswick, NJ
(For future tour dates and locations go to http://www.pippinthemusical.com/index.php)
When: March 24, 2017

Who: Teens and Up
Me - I enjoyed Pippin. The story was very different than anything I have seen before. It was about a guy who was trying to find his purpose in life, and in the process he tried all these different things. It was good and entertaining.  It was a very funny show. The characters were unique in interesting ways. There was even a duck, but it wasn't a real duck. The acting was good. I liked the songs too. My favorite is Corner of the Sky. However, a lot of the songs are good. I had heard a lot of the songs before because my mom, and my dad, and my sister saw the show before even though I didn't. There were a lot of really cool circus parts in the show. They made the show more interesting. Even though they had all the circus elements they still had some dance in it too. The dance was nice. If you ever have the chance you should go see it, it's a good show.
Mom - Pippin is a great show. It is one of those rare shows where it is a toss up as to who enjoys it more the cast or the audience. It is full of interesting characters and delightful memorable songs. Probably the most famous song from the show is Corner of the Sky. However, the rest of the score is really great too. The current touring version of the show which recently played the State Theatre New Jersey in New Brunswick, New Jersey is based on the Broadway revival of the show. This version of the show played on Broadway from 2013 to 2015 and was nominated for ten Tonys and won four including Best Revival of a Musical. This version of the show had some small changes to the plot, but the biggest difference was the addition of circus elements to the show. The circus elements work well for the story and are very entertaining. They include acrobatics, balancing and even the character of a grandmother swinging on a trapeze. Having seen both the tour and the Broadway version of the show, I can definitely say, the tour is of equal caliber to the Broadway version. The cast is equally talented and equally suited to their roles. Over all, the show is equally as entertaining. It is just a blast of fun from beginning to end.

We were given free tickets to Ring Twice for Miranda for review purposes. Any and all opinions are our own.

What: Ring Twice for Miranda

Where: City Center Stage II
             131 W. 55th St.
             New York, NY

When: Now through April 16, 2017

Who: Recommended for Ages 16 and Up
Mom - If you are looking for a light happy show, this is not it. However, if you are fascinated by doomsday scenarios and what will happen if the world descends into chaos, you may enjoy it. The world of the show is ruled by a character named Sir whose house is haven from the hell that the outside world has become, and he gets to decide who stays and who goes. Miranda is the maid who keeps him entertained but not in the way you would think. Elliot is the butler, and when he is thrown out she goes with him. They'll have to try to survive on the mean streets or find a way to get back into Sir's house and his good graces. The show is well written and well acted and definitely not predictable. The interesting set makes good use of the small stage. If you are interested in a completely unique theatrical experience, you may want to give this show a try.
And that's our view. Tune in tomorrow for Funtivity Friday.

Where-To-Go Wednesday - Whitney Museum of American Art

We were given free tickets to The Whitney Museum for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.
What: Whitney Museum of American Art

Where: 99 Ganssevoort St.
            New York, NY

Who: All ages

Me -The Whitney Museum of American Art was enjoyable. We went on a Kid's Tour. It was fascinating.   We saw a stained glass window with a lot of symbols in it. There were these weird moving mannequins in bathing suits with virtual reality glasses on. There were these sculptures that looked like chairs. They also had a chair that looked like a piece of art but you could actually sit on it.  A lot of people could sit on it at once. The part of it that  looked soft was hard, and the part of  it that looked hard was really comfortable. There was a section with paintings that had legs attached to them holding them up. There were a bunch of banners hanging from the ceiling. In the stairwell there were these different kinds of mannequins. One was a giant baby. It was creepy. There was even art work outside and you could go outside on different floors of the museum. One of the outside exhibits was these giant plastic cubes. There was a lot of snow on the ground when we visited the museum, and it looked like the snow was in the cubes. You could also see your reflection in them. There were trees in one section but that was inside. I don't know what trees have to do with art  anyway. They were pretty and colorful though. There was an area called Open Studio where kids and the adults with them got to make art. There was a picture of bathtub by a window. There was this purple couch. There was another section were there were these tiles and sinks, and it looked like a bathroom. Over all, it was a really fun place.

Mom's view: There are lot of art museums in New York and some of them are not very family friendly. Some even have minimum age requirements. That is not the case for the Whitney Museum of American Art. The Whitney Museum of American Art  is extremely welcoming to families. In fact, they have events and activities for all ages including Strollers Tours, Kid's Tours and Open Studio time. Stroller tours are pretty self explanatory. Kid's Tours are for children ages 5 and up, and they are free with admission to the museum.  They are given about 3 times a day on Saturdays. However, you must sign up  in advance and only a limited amount of people are allowed on each tour so if you go to the museum and you are interested in that, you should sign up right away. If you think a kid's tour is going to be an exhausting trek through the museum with a bunch of bored little kids, don't worry the tours are nothing like that. The tours are short and very interactive. They involve visits to only two different works of art. I am not sure if they are always the same two works of art or this varies, however. The two  art works are discussed in a fun way for kids where the kids are asked a lot of questions and able to give their opinions a lot. Also, kids get to search for things in the artwork and even get to do a little drawing of their own. Open studio is also on Saturdays but does not require a ticket or registration. It gives kids the opportunity to create their own works of art related to a particular work of art that is currently in the museum. Each week a different work of art is chosen for inspiration. Open Studio runs from 10:30 AM to 3:00 PM. If you are not a kid and you do not have a kid and you are afraid that with all this family friendliness, the Whitney must be a noisy, crazy place with kids running all over. Don't be. It is actually pretty quiet and peaceful. Since the museum is so welcoming to kids, they are kept busy, happy and entertained  there. Therefore, they have no reason to run wild and annoy other museum guests and that makes the Whitney Museum of American Art a great place to visit for everyone.

And that's our view. Tune in tomorrow for Theater Thursday.

Tips for Tuesday - Books: Surprises According to Humphrey and Beastia

We may have been given some of the below mentioned book for free for review purposes. This post may also contain affiliate links. If you click on a link and make a purchase, we may be compensated. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.
Me - Today I am recommending Surprises According to Humphrey by Betty G. Birney. This is a book about Humphrey the classroom hamsters. There are a whole series of books about Humphrey. These books are good for kids who are not just starting to read chapter books but a little bit beyond that. The books are really funny. They are told from the hamsters point of view, and the hamster has human emotions. Kids who like funny books and books about animals would enjoy these books.
Mom - Today I am recommending Beastia by Zoe Cruz. With a new version of Beauty and the Beast currently in movie theaters, this book is very timely. It puts a unique spin on the old familiar Beauty and the Beast story. Here the beast character is a female. Rebekah Austin was not the nicest girl particularly to Jo-Ann who used to be her friend and suddenly wasn't good enough for her anymore. Then, Rebekah's Dad dies, and she gets kidnapped and deformed by a mad man, and her life turns upside down. This book with its fast moving short chapters is a really quick read. It should be required reading for all teenage girls (or any girls) who think that all they'll ever need to get by is their looks, and therefore how they treat other people doesn't matter.

And that's our view. Tune in tomorrow for Where-To-Go Wednesday.

A More Theater Monday Monthly Mash-up for March 2017- At This Performance and Church & State

Me - My topic for this month is  At This Performance Broadway Understudy Concerts. These concerts are really cool. The performers are really good. I would be excited to see any of the performers I've seen in a Broadway understudy concert in a show. They are really talented. The most recent At This Performance concert was Monday March 20, 2017. Performers at the show included:

The understudy for Carole King in Beautiful
Three understudies from In Transit
The understudy for Pierre in Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812
The understudy for Indigo in Paramour
The understudy for Emilio Estefan in On Your Feet
The understudies for the current Off Broadway production of Sweeney Todd

I can't wait for the next At This Performance concert which will be on Sunday April 2, 2017 at  The Lions Theatre at Theatre at 410 W. 42nd Street, New York, New York. For more information or to order tickets go to http://www.musicalstonight.org/.
*****************************************************************************************************
Mom- My topic this month is Church & State. Church & State is currently playing at New World Stages, 340 W. 50th St. New York, NY. Like the current Keen Company production of When It's You, Church & State also deals with the topic of gun violence. However, unlike When It's You which overall is more of a serious drama, Church & State is billed as a comedy. A lot of it is actually very funny. The characters mainly a senator, his wife,  and his campaign manager (can be very funny and there are a lot of funny lines. The story involves a senator running for re-election who has a crisis of faith and isn't sure whether to believe in God anymore when a school shooting occurs in his town. It is well written and well acted by the talented  four person cast. In addition to the characters mentioned previously there are also a bunch of smaller roles played by the same actor. It is not a show for children due to the subject matter. However, if you are an adult and you appreciate a show that not only entertains but makes you think, this show is a good choice.

He doesn't even believe the story of how his father proposed to the love of his life, his wife, and Will's mother Sandra, in a field full of daffodils.

59E59 Theaters announces the 2017 BRITS OFF BROADWAY lineup
The US premiere of a rediscovered J.B. Priestley gem and a new comedy by Torben Betts anchor this year’s festival

59E59 Theaters (Elysabeth Kleinhans, Artistic Director; Peter Tear, Executive Producer; Brian Beirne, Managing Director) is thrilled to announce the 2017 line-up forBrits Off Broadway, the critically acclaimed annual festival of New British Theater. Now in its 13th Season, Brits Off Broadway kicks off on Tuesday, April 4 and runs through Sunday, July 2.  Single ticket prices range from $25 - $70 ($20 - $49 for 59E59 Members). Tickets to Brits Off Broadway go on sale to the general public on February 21, with an exclusive pre-sale for 59E59 Members beginning on February 14. Tickets are available by calling Ticket Central at 212-279-4200 or online atwww.59e59.org.
Now in its 13th year, Brits Off Broadway continues to be the highlight of the spring theater season, introducing bold new artists and new British theater to adventurous New York audiences.

This years Brits Off Broadway festival opens with the story of a gambling man who places one last bet after discovering he has cancer in A GAMBLER’S GUIDE TO DYING. Henry Naylor returns to this year’s Festival with a double bill of two powerful, timely one acts: ECHOES, a story that draws astonishing parallels between the lives of a Jihadi bride and a Victorian pioneer; and ANGEL a stunning true story of a female resistance fighter most feared by ISIS.

FOSSILS whisks us off to Scotland, where a discovery in Loch Ness draws a science researcher to the famous loch in search of her missing father. IPHIGENIA IN SPLOTT is a modern reworking of the enduring Greek legend set in the Splott district of Cardiff, Wales, which arrives at 59E59 Theaters after its a critically acclaimed run at The National.

A lesbian woman must come to terms with her partner’s transition in ROTTERDAM. Playwright Matthew Wilkinson returns to 59E59 Theaters with MY EYES WENT DARK, the searing story of a man who exacts his own revenge after losing his family in a plane crash. A broken down train forces a couple on a first date to communicate without their WiFi enabled devices in UNDERGROUND.

Anchoring the festival in Theater A are two British comedies from two different centuries highlighting how far the class wars have come in Britain (and also how little they’ve changed): the US premiere of a rediscovered J.B. Priestley comedic gem THE ROUNDABOUT and Torben Betts’ (Alan Ayckbourn’s protégé) madcap comedy of manners INVINCIBLE.

Full details of the 2017 Brits Off Broadway lineup:

April 4 – April 23
A GAMBLER’S GUIDE TO DYING written and performed by Gary McNair, directed by Gareth Nicolls
Produced by Show and Tell in association with the Traverse Theatre Company
Tickets: $25 - $35 ($20 - $24.50 for 59E59 Members)

This is the story of one boy’s granddad who won a fortune betting on the 1966 soccer World Cup and, when diagnosed with cancer, gambled it all on living to see the year 2000. An intergenerational tale of what we live for and what we leave behind.

April 11 – May 7
ANGEL & ECHOES written and directed by Henry Naylor
With Avital Lvova, Serena Manteghi, and Rachel Smyth
Produced by Redbeard Theatre Ltd with Gilded Balloon Production
Tickets: $35 ($24.50 for 59E59 Members)

Henry Naylor returns to this year’s Brits Off Broadway with a double bill of provocative theater. ANGEL is inspired by the story of a modern legend: a female sniper who struck fear in the hearts of jihadists and held ISIS in check for over a year in war torn Syria. ECHOES, back by popular demand after its sell-out too-short run last year, tells the parallel stories of two women born 175 years apart: a Victorian pioneer woman wants to build an Empire and a present-day Islamist schoolgirl wants to build a Caliphate. These two staggering stories will continue to haunt long after the curtain goes down.

April 20 – May 28
THE ROUNDABOUT written by J.B. Priestley, directed by Hugh Ross
With Steven Blakeley, Lisa Bowerman, Richenda Carey, Charlie Field, Derek Hutchinson, Annie Jackson, Ed Pinker, Brian Protheroe, Hugh Sachs, and Carol Starks

Richard Kettlewell is an old Etonian whose business ventures are failing. Over a crowded weekend, his daughter Pamela, whom he hardly knows, returns from Russia, a passionate communist; his ex-wife and mistress both turn up; and his butler has a big win at the races. THE ROUNDABOUT is funny, touching, highly perceptive look at England in the 1930s, when it looked, just possibly, as if the social order might be changing. This delightful comedy by one of Britain’s most prolific playwrights J.B. Priestley was first seen in 1933, and this production marks its NYC premiere.

April 25 – May 14
FOSSILS created by Bucket Club, directed by Nel Crouch
With Adam Farrell, Luke Murphy, and Helen Vinten
Produced by Bucket Club in association with Farnham Maltings

Vanessa’s life is science. Fact based, evidence led, no nonsense, no monsters. But when a
photograph surfaces showing something in Loch Ness, she must embark on a very personal research project.

May 9 – June 4
IPHIGENIA IN SPLOTT written by Gary Owen, directed by Rachel O'Riordan
With Sophie Melville
Produced by Sherman Theatre
Tickets: $25 ($20 for 59E59 Members)

Effie’s life is a mess of drink, drugs, and drama every night, and a hangover worse than death the next day – till one night gives her the chance to be something more. Inspired by the enduring Greek myth, this urgent new play makes its debut in New York following performances at the National Theatre, London.

With Anna Martine Freeman, Alice McCarthy, Ellie Morris, Ed Eales-White

Now, as Adrian begins his transition, Alice must face a question she never thought she'd ask...does this mean she's straight?

Christopher Harper
With Elizabeth Boag, Emily Bowker, Graeme Brookes, and Alastair Whatley

With the recession biting hard, Emily and Oliver have decided to downsize and shift their middleclass London lifestyle to a small town in the north of England. One night, they open their doors and invite next door neighbors, Dawn and Alan, into their home. Over the course of a disastrous evening of olives, anchovies, Karl Marx, and abstract art; class and culture collide where the consequences are as tragic as they are hilarious.

Brooklyn, NY-- Doug Varone and Dancers return to BAM to celebrate 30 years of visionary work with three dances representing the past, present, and future of the company. The program comprises a revival of the Philip Glass-scored Possession (1994) and the New York premieres of ReComposed (2015) and Varone's latest work, Folded (2016).

Possession, inspired by A.S. Byatt's century-spanning novel of the same name, is set to Glass' beautiful Concerto for Violin and Orchestra. Eight dancers, in duets, explore the facets of relationships, as the emotional and physical balance of the work shifts between each pair. ReComposed is a whirlwind of color and careening movement, inspired by the pastel paintings of abstract expressionist Joan Mitchell and set to Michael Gordon's propulsive Dystopia. Folded, an intimate duet set to a score by MacArthur Fellow Julia Wolfe, explores the questions and contradictions inherent in our personal beliefs and faiths.
