I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

Sunday Scoop Week of 5/14/18 - What's Happening This Week or Coming Up Soon

New York Nightlife Impresario VARDA Returns to Experimental Theatre with ALL ROADS LEAD TO THE KURSKI STATION

PLAYS EAST VILLAGE PLAYHOUSE
Opening Night is Thursday, May 17

All Roads Lead to the Kurski Station, a play based on the postmodern Russian novel Moscow Circles by Vienya Efofeev, is set to play the East Village Playhouse (340 East 6thStreet).  Adapted and directed by Varda, the play stars Elliott MorseMia Vallet, and Rivers Duggan.  Beginning  Performances are Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 9pm, and Sundays at 3pm.  Opening night is set for Thursday, May 17 at 9pm, the final performance is slated for Sunday, June 24.  Tickets are $40 and available throughOvationTix.com.  There are also a select number of $30 under 30 and student tickets for $20.

All Roads Lead to the Kurski Station, a loose adaptation of the postmodern Russian novel Moscow Circles by Vienya Efofeev, follows a poet-drunkard called Vienya as he traverses Soviet Moscow in an attempt to catch a train to visit his beloved in the distant suburb of Petuskhi. Along the way, he is haunted by fantastic visions, and two mysterious women, seemingly determined to frustrate his plans.

In the tradition of anti-theater more popular in New York City in the 70s and 80s, and the works of artists such as The Living Theater, Bread and Puppet, Grotowski, Kantor, etc., All Roads Lead to the Kurski Station rejects naturalistic forms of narrativization and storytelling. Instead, a sequence of maniacal fever dreams explore Soviet life through the lens of Vienya’s troubled mind. Experience and emotion fuse with references from religion, art, history, and more in a psychotic chorus, creating poetic and surreal images and hallucinatory episodes reminiscent of the strange logic of the unconscious. In these times of revived Cold War tensions, widespread alienation, and looming threats of authoritarianism emerging across the globe, All Roads Lead to the Kurski Station is an urgent warning, and bitter prophecy.  The stylistic fusion of European avant-garde theatre, performance art, Dadaist aesthetics, satire, and montage invites the viewer to experiment with interpretation within the intellectual and emotional opulence of Vienya’s phantasmagoria.

Voices of a People’s History of the United States
Voices seeks to educate and inspire a new generation working for social justice. This free performance marks the culmination of a yearlong project with New York City students at the High School for Arts, Imagination and Inquiry, a New York City public school located at the Martin Luther King Jr. Educational Campus, cofounded by Lincoln Center Education. After studying the speeches, letters, and songs of the brave people who inspired Howard Zinn’s seminal work, A People’s History of the United States, the students of HSAII will perform their selections along with actors Brian Jones and Susan Pourfar.

Voices of a People’s History of the United States brings to life the extraordinary history of ordinary people who built the movements that made the United States what it is today, ending slavery and Jim Crow, protesting war and the genocide of Native Americans, creating unions and the eight-hour work day, advancing women’s rights and gay liberation, and struggling to right wrongs of the day. Jody Sperling/Time Lapse Dance presents four studio performances featuring two new works-in-process and a revival of Ice Cycle. The program highlights Sperling's ongoing collaborations with composer Matthew Burtner and cellist Scott Johnson.

A pioneer in the field of environmental music, Burtner will perform live in NYC (May 16-18 only) for the first iteration of Wind Rose, a new work-in-progress for the company that visualizes changing local and global winds patterns, and plays with different rhythmic and spatial patterning, pushing the boundaries of Sperling's use of her Fuller-influenced apparatus.A wind rose is defined as a time-honored measurement tool used by meteorologists to indicate wind speed and direction at a particular location. With Ice Cycle, which was inspired by Sperling's experience dancing on polar sea ice, Burtner and Sperling convey the fragility and dynamism of the Arctic icescape. The program also includes Sound Study, a developing collaboration between Sperling and Johnson begun during a residency with Human Impacts Institute. The playful duet investigates the atmospheric vibrations of the performance space.

PROGRAM

BLOODLINES (Music by Shuying Li; Libretto by Lila Palmer): For Marcus and Esme, life is good. As children, they survived a war, and emigrated to adoption in a new country. As adults, they flourished and found love in each other. Then a strange series of events brings the old country dangerously to life in the present, begging the question: are all secrets better exposed to the light, or should some things remain in darkness?

THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO NANA (Music by Liliya Ugay; Libretto by Lorene Cary): Nana's Ghost discovers that her granddaughter is revising the libretto to an opera she's been writing about Nana's life - and Nana's Ghost is not pleased.  A haunted wrestling for control begins, with the composer also advocating for the version of the story he thinks will sing.

THE TREE OF ETERNAL YOUTH(Music by Andy Teirstein; Libretto by Julian Crouch): In an orchard, on one particular tree, hangs a peach - but no ordinary peach. At the foot of this same tree, an elderly couple, who long ago made love beneath its branches and carved a heart into its bark, consider their options: To grow old together, or choose eternal youth.

Featured guest artists performing as part of InsightALT: Opera in Eden include soprano Summer Hassan, mezzo soprano Maya Lahyani, mezzo soprano Margaret Lattimore, tenor David Margulis, baritone Brian James Myer, baritone John Tibbets, bass baritone Ryan Kuster, and pianist/music director Gloria Kim.

Downtown Jewish Life presents
INTO THE NIGHT
Saturday, May 19, 2018
hosted by The 14th Street Y

Downtown Jewish Life presents INTO THE NIGHT, a contemporary spin on an ancient tradition of all night study during the Jewish Holiday of Shavuot, hosted by The 14th Street Y on Saturday, May 19, 2018 beginning 6pm.

The In[heir]itance Project will start the night with The Abraham Play from The Genesis Plays at 6pm. The Opening Ritual, hosted by several community leaders with live music, liturgy, poetry, and performance, will follow at 7:30pm, and programming will continue throughout the evening until dawn at 344 E. 14th Street, NYC. More than 30 downtown community partners, including museums, synagogues, and artists, will join in this fifth-annual night-time journey through conversation, culture, and ritual.

The Tikkun is a night-long journey through culture in the vein of the "White Nights" of European traditions. The event will feature conversations and rituals led by artists, musicians, shamans, teachers, scholars, and rabbis. Downtown synagogues and community organizations will lead sessions and workshops designed to provoke philosophical discussion with attendees from all levels of observance.

Introducing this year's Downtown Tikkun at the 14th Street Y, the In[heir]itance Project will provide a thoughtful, interactive performance of Abraham; Abe, a Wall Street stock jock, returns to the office of his recently deceased, estranged father to search for a lost deed. Among the piles of papers strewn about the office, Abe doesn't find the deed, but instead, finds a scavenger hunt his father that has left behind for him - and the audience holds the clues.

Another exciting performance will be presented in the pool to further push the boundaries of where we find art in their space. "Beneath the Surface", a site-specific underwater dance experience by Lenora Lee Dance, featuring Yi-Ting Hsu and Peter Cheng, is sure to engage all audiences.

For the first time ever, this year's offerings include a Hebrew Track, during which all will engage with artists, stories, texts, and Kabalah in Hebrew, led by Midrasha New York. Another special program will feature A Talmud Shiur Focusing on Women's Voices in the Talmud, and Rabbi Eva Sax-Bolder from the Shul of NY will lead guests through English and Hebrew chants as we explore our own paths through the wilderness, bamidbar, to receiving Torah. Come with an open heart for this participatory chanting, drumming, and meditation experience.

The evening will include many more incredible programs led by Downtown Jewish Life partners and Rabbis. While learning deep INTO THE NIGHT, Jewish texts will be explored and unique insights will be discovered as people from all ages and backgrounds grow and change.

Admission is free and there will be programs for all levels of observance. A photo ID is required for entry. Advance RSVP is recommended. For more information and to reserve a spot, please visit http://www.14streety.org/IntoTheNight.

A full schedule of participants and program can be found online at www.14streety.org/IntoTheNight.
